"Ki" is a non-resonant note made on the big end of
the drum (the bayan).
It is important to note that it is not made with the
tips of the fingers (I have seen some people strike the drum so
hard that way that they have put their hand right through the head
and broken the drum. Therefore it should not be like a karate
chop.)
"Ki" is made by spreading the fingers apart, and
bringing the hand down on the drum so that the side of the thumb
strikes first. The hand then flattens out on the head, one finger
at a time, in rapid succession. After striking the head, the hand
remains on the head and the head is not allowed to continue to
vibrate (see illustration on right).
