The Intermediate Off-beat
When Sripati dasa first started playing this beat during Tulasi
kirtan at Bhaktivedanta Manor in 1978, he had us all trying
to figure out how to play that very attractive and mysterious
beat. This mrdanga beat is one of the principle elements of
the Jaipur-style Tulasi kirtan which we will describe later
in this course. It's a darn good beat. It sounds great, and it's
bewildering to someone who doesn't know the secret.
So
let's reveal the secret by just coming straight out with the
mantra for this beat. Here it is:
tuk ta ge tiDha
tiri ge Ge -
There is one brief pause at the end (not two). The note tiri
appears twice. The last "Ge" thrown in at the end makes
it an off-beat. But there's more to it than that. To do it really
properly, you've got to hold back on that last Ge just a
little too long - unexpectedly long. Even if you don't do that,
it's still an off-beat because of the last "Ge," but
when you hold it off just a little bit more, it has an interesting
effect.
