What is the Indian Beat?
We
call this beat the "Indian Beat" because it is a cool
beat that you often hear played in Hindu temples.
The beat was taught to me by my mrdanga guru, Sripati
dasa, and he received it from the devotees who had traveled to
Jaipur, India. It used to be, and probably still is, played
frequently by devotees doing kirtan before the
Radha-Govindaji deity, only they play it on a different kind of
drum. It does lend itself very well to being played on the
mrdanga, however. Play this at a Sunday feast crowd full of
Gujarati's and you'll get everyone clapping their hands.
There are a couple of variations of the beat. I'll teach you
the simple version and one variation.
